ANKLE PAIN

Ankle Pain

Much like your foot, your ankle is a complex network made up of bones, tendons, ligaments and muscle. It is built to be strong enough to bear your weight and help you move, but this complexity means it too is prone to injury. When it comes to your ankle pain, you may feel it either on the inside or outside of the joint, or along the backside where your Achilles tendon is located. Either way, ankle discomfort can be debilitating, and it can be caused by a number of different things. Below we’ll discuss the common causes and treatments for ankle pain.

Causes

As we mentioned above, ankle pain can be caused by a variety of different things. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Sprain
  • Tendinitis
  • Arthritis
  • Joint Inflammation
  • Broken Foot
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Stress Fracture
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture

It can be difficult to determine when to see a doctor if you don’t know what exactly is causing your pain. However, if the pain intensifies, or if you have signs of an infection like redness, swelling or fever, seek medical attention right away.

Treatment

Fortunately, many causes of your ankle pain can be treated at home. Try to rest your ankle and foot as much as possible, and take a break from any rigorous activity. Additionally, you can try icing your ankle. Try to ice it for 15 to 20 minutes at least three times per day. To reduce swelling, you can keep your foot elevated and use a compression bandage. Finally, if your ankle pain is difficult to manage, you can use over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

In more severe cases, your doctor may recommend treating the cause of your ankle pain with physical therapy. If you have a torn tendon, however, you may need surgery to fix it.
