Spinal cord stimulation therapy and peripheral nerve field stimulation are related types of electrical stimulation that treat chronic pain. Mild electrical pulses are directed to disrupt pain messages to the brain, reducing the feeling of pain. Spinal cord stimulation is used most often after nonsurgical pain treatment options have failed to provide sufficient relief. Spinal cord stimulators may be used to treat or manage different types of chronic pain, including back pain, post-surgical pain, arachnoiditis, pain after an amputation, heart pain, injuries to spinal cord and nerve related pain.
DORSAL ROOT GANGLION STIMULATOR IMPLANTATION (DRG)
The DRG stimulator is well-suited for specific neuropathic conditions, which include CRPS, pelvic pain, groin neuralgia, extremity pain and other nerve pain involving isolated parts of the body. DRG stimulators are new advances in neurostimulation and offer a non-destructive, reversible alternative to treat difficult nerve problems that fail to respond to more conservative care. Neurostimulation is far less invasive than traditional back surgery and is moving from a therapy of last resort to a therapy that may prevent the need for more aggressive treatments like surgery or nerve destruction.
INTRATHECAL PUMP REFILLS / IMPLANTATION (ITP)
The intrathecal pump system consists of a pump/reservoir implanted between the muscle and skin of your abdomen and a catheter that carries pain medication (blue area) from the pump to the spinal cord and nerves. The pump is programmed to slowly release medication over a period of time. A pump may help with sciatica, cancer pain, reflex sympathetic dystrophy, causalgia, arachnoiditis and chronic pancreatitis.
PERIPHERAL NERVE STIMULATOR IMPLANTATION (PNS)
Peripheral nerve stimulation, frequently referred to as PNS, is a commonly used approach to treat chronic pain. It involves surgery that places a small electrical device (a wire-like electrode) next to one of the peripheral nerves located beyond the brain or spinal cord. The electrode delivers rapid electrical pulses that are felt like mild tingles (so-called paresthesias).
SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR IMPLANTATION (SCS)
A spinal cord stimulator (SCS) device is surgically placed under your skin and sends a mild electric current to your spinal cord. Thin wires carry current from a pulse generator to the nerve fibers of the spinal cord. When turned on, the SCS stimulates the nerves in the area where your pain is felt. Pain is reduced because the electrical pulses modify and mask the pain signal from reaching your brain.
