Electrodiagnostics

Electrodiagnosis is a method of medical diagnosis that gathers information regarding nerve injury, muscle injury, muscle disease, localization and prognosis through electrical technology. This information is used to help focus treatment on the exact site of injury. These tests use needles and small shocks to assess the signaling of your nerves and muscles. EMG tests and nerve conduction studies can both help find out if you have a disorder of your muscles, nerves, or both. These tests can be done separately, but they are usually done at the same time. The two components of electrodiagnostic are Nerve Conduction Studies NCS and Electromyography EMG. EMG measures muscle response or electrical activity in response to a nerve’s stimulation of the muscle. EMG tests feel like shots when the electrodes are inserted. NCS consists of stimulating a peripheral nerve and recording the response elsewhere on the nerve or associated muscle using a recording electrode. NCS tests may feel like a slight electric shock.

• Muscle weakness
• Tingling or numbness in arms, legs, hands, feet, and/or face
• Muscle cramps, spasms, and/or twitching
• Paralysis of any muscles
