TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

Muscle Injections

Intramuscular injections are the injections of a substance directly into muscle. This is done so the medication absorbs into the bloodstream rapidly. Intramuscular injections are typically used to deliver drugs and vaccines.

PIRIFORMIS INJECTION

A piriformis injection is an injection of a long-lasting steroid into the piriformis muscle of your buttock. This steroid medication injected will help reduce the inflammation and/or swelling around the nerves that pass near or through the piriformis muscle. This in turn may reduce your pain, numbness, tingling or other symptoms that may contribute to nerve inflammation, irritation or swelling.

The piriformis muscle is a flat, band-like muscle located in the buttocks near the top of the hip joint. This muscle is important in lower body movement because it stabilizes the hip joint and lifts and rotates the thigh away from the body.

PSOAS INJECTION

A posas injection is an injection of a local anesthetic and steroid into either the right or left psoas muscle, depending on which side is affected. The aim of the injection is to reduce inflammation, irritation and swelling.

The psoas muscle is located in the lower lumbar region of the spine and extends through the pelvis to the femur. This muscle works by flexing the hip joint and lifting the upper leg towards the body. A common example of the movement created from this muscle is walking.

SCALENE INJECTION

Scalene muscle injections are used to confirm the diagnosis of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome and predict the response of patients to surgery.

The scalene muscles are three paired muscles (anterior, middle and posterior), located in the lateral aspect of the neck. Collectively, they form part of the floor of the posterior triangle of the neck. The scalene act as accessory muscles of respiration, and perform flexion at the neck.

TRIGGER POINT INJECTIONS

Trigger point injections are used to treat painful areas of muscle that contain trigger points, or knots of muscle that form when muscles do not relax. Many times, these knots can be felt under the skin. Trigger points irritate the nerves around them and cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in another part of the body.

QUADRATUS LUMBORUM INJECTION

Quadratus lumborum injection is a Botox injection into the quadratus lumborum muscle which can provide sustained pain relief in some patients. This can be of diagnostic benefit and therapeutic value in patients with chronic low back pain.
