ORTHOPEDIC EXTREMITY SURGEON
James Carson, MD, is a board-certified orthopedic extremity surgeon, specializing in hip and knee reconstruction. After completing his biochemistry degree from the University of Michigan, he began his medical studies at St. John’s Hopkins University, where he eventually earned a dual degree in medicine and public health. He then went on to complete his residency in orthopedic surgery at Howard University and was fellowship trained in hip and knee replacements at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Carson knew he wanted to go into orthopedic surgery while in high school. As a student-athlete, he became exposed to this specialty as a patient himself. But it wasn’t until he embarked on a mission trip in medical school that he decided to focus on joint replacement. During this pivotal mission trip, he replaced multiple patients’ hips and knees, helping restore mobility and a lifetime of possibilities to so many people.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Carson enjoys traveling with his family to learn and experience new cultures. He’s fluent in English and Spanish and is a huge sports fan, especially sports revolving around the University of Michigan!
